Never been to the opera at all, just watched a bunch on TV over the years.
I may be misusing the word, being too lazy to look it up; assumed libretto is "all the words." Not that I haven't written music in my head, but never learned notation.
Free time? You mean, decompressing-from-being-out-in-the-world time?
Tried learning piano as a kid, and in theory I got it, but in practice I found (and find--not that I have a piano now) that my left hand simply won't do something complicated while my right hand is doing something else complicated. If they invent a one-handed piano, I suppose I'm your guy.
Maybe you're irredeemably inept, though I find it unlikely. I suspect that most people can learn to play an instrument and would be greatly rewarded by even limited competence.
I didn't start playing anything until I was... twenty two I think. I decided I wanted to play guitar, since both my roommates did and one of them was quite accomplished, offering me some intro lessons.
It was frustrating. My fingers hurt, a lot. Nothing sounded right. My hands refused to make the stretches, muscles protested at odd positions. It took months just to get some comfort with simple open chords and blues scales. But, since I had spent $450 I couldn't really afford on a decent acoustic guitar, I kept at it.
Now, I'm still not competent. But I have a lot of fun. It's worth it.
I wouldn't discount your abilities until you've spent at least thirty days of daily hour long practice sessions, because that's really what it takes.
Maybe you're more of a flute guy, though... or glockenspiel! If you get a glockenspiel I'll totally buy you a beer.
Huh. Had gotten the impression you were about 22. Anyway.
There's playing and there's playing "right." Seem to recall wowing my grade-school classmates by playing the Star Wars theme on the classroom piano pretty well--by which I mean, plinking away with two fingers. Same way I type to this day, often quite fast. But you're right: part of it is that I just never stuck with the regular practice.
(Had always wanted to learn the theremin, actually, but I finally got to try one one day and man, that thing is impossible.)
Alas, I am permanently socially outcast by my absolute revulsion for beer. Wine cooler or hard lemonade is about the farthest I'll go (having somehow lost my college-age taste for vodka and/or sake. But thanks for the offer.

If I had a libretto I think I would find some musicians and get it performed. Somewhere, anywhere, make it real.
